Michael Richmond “Petch/River” Petchell, sr., 67, passed peacefully Thursday evening, surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mona Patricia Popkess and Theodore Petchell, sr., his brothers Robert “Slugger” Link and Theodore Petchell, jr., and his sisters Paula Petchell and Jane Maloney. He is survived by his wife Terry Irwin Petchell, his children Michael Petchell, jr. and Mikayla Petchell, his sister Patricia Crockett, and untold others who enjoyed his company over the years. Mike was as quick with a joke as he was with a complaint. He could charm his way out of nearly all tight spots he got himself into. He could solve most problems with a few hours and some choice items from his pile of junk. He always had some treasure to give away. He loved backgammon, dominos, cards, really any game where he could hassle his opponent and maybe cheat just a little. He made an excellent French toast and Caesar salad, but only after a little flattery. He loved to talk to nearly anybody about nearly anything and he particularly loved to tell his children the same stories one hundred times. He was a dreamer, making plan after plan, and getting you to believe him. He loved 7Up and frozen custard, cheeseburgers with mustard, pickle, and onion, and his wife’s Italian cream cheese cake. He dressed sharp, always smelled good, and gave hugs you wouldn’t believe. He loved being on the water more than almost anything, except maybe driving his new Mercedes a little too fast. He’s probably the most fun you’ve ever had. Loving him wasn’t always easy, but being loved by him felt like winning the lottery. He battled addiction with all that he had for over 50 years and went down swinging. He will be missed terribly, every day.
