Matthew Paul Stewart, 53, of Eldon, Missouri died peacefully in his sleep on September 7, 2021 at the Eldon Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Eldon, Missouri. Matt was born in St. Louis on July 1, 1968 to Paul and Tina Stewart. He graduated from the Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis, Missouri in 1986, and moved with his parents to Eldon, Missouri in 1996. Matt was employed for many years at Gateway Industries, a sheltered workshop for the disabled in Eldon, until his total blindness, deafness, and other disabilities compelled his retirement from working. He loved his job and his many friends at Gateway Industries.
Matt was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and rarely wore any attire other than one of his many Cardinals jerseys. He loved his annual weeks at Wonderland Camp at the Lake of the Ozarks and was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church in Eldon, Missouri. He is survived by his sister Cathy Waltz (Randy) of Jefferson City; aunt Paula Brennan (Jerry) of Quincy, IL and Bradenton, FL; uncle Jack Stewart (Donna) of Wildwood and Lake Ozark, MO; nephews Joshua Waltz (Elizabeth) of St. Charles, MO; and Benjamin Orr of Tucson, AZ; and by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Caron Orr Mathis of Tucson, AZ.
Visitation will be at the Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon starting at noon on Saturday, September 18, 2021, with services at 1:00 p.m. followed by burial in the family plot at the Oakland Cemetery in Moberly, Missouri. Contributions in Matt’s name to Wonderland Camp, 18591 Miller Circle, Rocky Mount, MO 65072, would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
