As would become his life of service to country and family, in 1948 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. During that time, he was an automobile mechanic, and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart in 1952.

Following his service there, he was self-employed in construction for many years, and taught Building and Trades at the Tri-County Technical School for a short time where his knack for handiwork and love for people flourished.

James was a well-loved, well-known man who made a lasting impact on the lives of many friends, family, neighbors, students, and community members over the years. He faithfully led his family as active members of Camp Chapel Assembly of God in Rocky Mount, MO through dedicated involvement in Sunday School, Sunday services, and helping out whenever it was needed. In his later years, family and friends could find him masterfully working at beautiful wood carving and rock tumbling projects and warmly hosting friends and family from all over with a smile.

A steadfast man of God, cornerstone of his family, unwavering in love as a husband of 69 years, father, grandfather, and also great grandfather, James will be remembered as a giant of the faith and an example of living a full life of love and service.
