Fred Mormann, 98, of Mary’s Home, passed away on February 28, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born on December 4, 1921 on the family farm in Mary’s Home, MO, to John and Anna (Kempker) Mormann, both of whom preceded him in death. On November 7, 1944, he married his beautiful bride, Evelyn Hart, at our Lady of the Snows Church, Mary’s Home, who survives at the home.
Fred recently celebrated his 75th wedding anniversary with his wife, Evelyn, who he affectionately called, Evie, in November with dear family and friends. Theirs was a true storybook kind of love. He enjoyed watching lovingly as his bride cooked, while he served as her “sous-chef”. The two enjoyed so many wonderful hobbies together, but none more than watching the St. Louis Cardinals at home.
Their door was always open to guests; they loved visitors. Fred was accustomed to asking any visitor if he could interest them in a ham sandwich. To this day, a long-running joke with his grandkids. He used to say, “You can’t give a ham sandwich away these days!”
Fred was a member of the United States Army during World War II. After being injured in a training exercise, he dedicated his career to the Missouri Department of Corrections, having worked 26 years for the organization. Faith was very important to Fred. He was a proud member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church his entire life. He was a lifelong farmer in Mary’s Home, with a passion for gardening - passing these traits along to his kids brought great joy to him. He enjoyed fishing, and what came along with it, a good fish fry.
Fred, and his witty humor will be fondly missed by so many. His endearing smile and rare, but infectious, belly laugh that came with his stories, will be missed most of all.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his son, Bill Mormann (Nancy) of Mary’s Home; his daughter, Diane Birdsong (Terry) of Gold Hill, North Carolina; his daughter-in-law, Diane Mormann of Jefferson City; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, all whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by two sisters; Hilda Hart and Mayme Doerhoff, his daughter, Judy Bashore; and his son, Roger Mormann.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020 from 4-7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Mary’s Home, MO. with a prayer service at 4:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at our Lady of the Snows Church in Mary’s Home, MO. with Rev. Callistus C. Okoroji officiating.
