Dick Dolby Obituary

Dick Dolby, 96, passed away August 10, 2019 at Good Shepherd Care Center. He was born August 1, 1923 to Matt T. and Gertrude O. (Vann) Dolby.  On April 6, 1946 he married Constance Shirley (Atherton) in Columbia, Missouri. Connie passed away April 17, 1993 just 9 days before their 47th anniversary. Their children were Harold H. (Hal) and Elizabeth A. (Liz) Calvert. Both Hal and Liz preceded him in death. On June 11, 1994 Dick married Geraldine Storms Frerichs in Ladue, Missouri who passed away December 2, 2006.

 

Dick attended Eldon public schools from 1929 through 1941 and was a student at the University of Missouri, Columbia until he entered the US Army during World War II.

 

Corporal Dick Dolby was an Artilleryman in the 84th Infantry Division, US Army serving from February 1943 until his honorable discharge January 1946.  The 84th entered France at Omaha Beach early August 1944 and fought through to the Elbe River in Germany April 1945. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars for the Ardennes (better known as the Battle of the Bulge), Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns.

 

From 1935 through 1946, Dick and his family owned and operated Ozark Tackle & Supply at the corner of Highway 54 and Aurora and from 1945 until early 1972 they owned and operated Dolby Locker Plant on South Maple. In 1972, he and Connie opened Dolby & Company Realtors until their retirement in 1985 at which time Hal and wife Becky continued to operate the business.

 

Dick was a member of numerous veterans, community, and business organizations. He was a font of information on the history and happenings of Eldon, the town he loved so much. Dick proudly served on the Eldon Centennial Committee in 1982.

 

Survivors include his sister, Joan T. Enloe; daughter in law, Charlotte R. (Becky) Dolby; grandson Matthew S Dolby his wife Jolene, their children Lauren and Colton; granddaughter Martha A (Dolby) Wood, her husband Shawn, their son Peyton; grandson James R. Calvert, his wife Kristel, their son Jamie and daughter Vivian; granddaughters Katherine E. Calvert and Jennifer L. Calvert.

 

Visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon, MO with the Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Bill Foglesong officiating.  Burial will follow at the Eldon City Cemetery will Full Military Honors presented.

 

Memorials in his name are suggested to the Disabled American Veteran’s or the Eldon First Christian Church Foundation.
